The nine months of the 2009 global recession has presented massive challenges to small and large businesses alike. This has been especially hard for Dubai as the economy here has only ever really experienced growth, so for many the massive redundancies, pay cuts and sudden need to watch every penny have come as a real shock. Earlier in the year, the Kershaw Leonard HR Forums focused on energising employees during troubled times and best practices when reducing the size of the work force, which at the time were very hot topics. However, as 2009 continues to unfold we believe it is now time to look at more positive actions to assist us all to structure for growth and a general increase in economic activity. Therefore Kershaw Leonard’s Autumn HR Forum was entitled ‘Time to grow – how to keep and recruit new talent’. It was held on Wednesday 14 October at the Shangri-La Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai. The format of the forum was the same as the previous events, featuring speakers and industry experts sharing their expertise. The speakers were: 1. Iain Collins - Watson Wyatt, “A case for focusing on non-cash rewards” 2. Mark Allan - Wet Fish Trading LLC “How I Built My Business and Weathered the Storm” 3. Paul Colley from Zurich Life “Harnessing corporate responsibility to maximize employee engagement.” Then followed the opportunity to discuss some major questions in breakout sessions, which continue to be a very popular part of the HR Forum. In response to the feedback we have received from the previous events the emphasis of this HR Forum was on the small businesses of Dubai, including the branch offices of large companies but who have a small number of local employees. Cost effective solutions are critical in this business sector and we hope we provided down to earth practical advice to assist small businesses prepare for the upturn that appears to be just around the corner.
